Our Values
We value Community.
The St. John’s community gathers each Sunday and at other times to praise God. Being a community is very important to us—we seek to support each other through life’s challenges and we celebrate with each other in life’s joys.
We are committed to a liberal theology.
Our Church challenges us, without telling us how to think. Through study and reflection, we have become more committed to a progressive stance on the issues debated in churches today, particularly in our support for same-sex relationships.
We are an inclusive community.
We welcome everyone: young and old; able-bodied and disabled; employed and unemployed; married, single, divorced, straight and gay; those from other countries and from next door; long-time members of our congregation and visitors. We have a long history of welcoming people with special needs. The diversity in our community is stimulating, at times even challenging, but a conditional welcome is really a rejection.
We invite you to share in the communion of bread and wine.
Our worship service is respectful and informal. We celebrate The Holy Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper, using a modern language service of worship of the Anglican Church of Canada. The Eucharist today may help you grow into the vows you have already made in baptism or it may be part of your growth towards the day when you seek to make a commitment to God in Christ through baptism.
We are uplifted by musical variety in worship
Sunday worship at our 10:30 service includes music by a roster of musicians that engages the diversity of our cultures in the wider community. Our musicians use a variety of instruments: piano, accordion, guitar, violin, organ, fiddle, harp and drums. Music may be boisterous, peaceful or traditional, depending on the musician scheduled for the day. At all times we seek to praise God with joy in our hearts.
We provide a child-friendly environment.
Your children will enjoy our weekly program, starting with the children’s focus at the beginning of the service and continuing in the church school with other activities. These can include stories, songs, games and even cooking, as they learn about prayer and Christian values. We seek to know and love God, and to model this love with the children in our community.
We take Prayer seriously.
If you are in crisis or you know someone who is going through a difficult time, you may call the church to begin the ministry of the Prayer Circle. The concern will be prayed from person to person around the circle, and included (if you wish) in the prayers at our worship services. You can count on a supportive listener, a circle of people who will pray for your concern, and confidentiality within the circle.
St. John's is an Open House. You don't have to buy into the whole package to walk through the doors. Welcome to Church!
